About the North Carolina Symphony

Since 1932, the North Carolina Symphony has been one of the premier orchestras in the United States. Every year, the Symphony is responsible for 300-plus concerts, educational programs, and community engagement offerings across the state.

• March 10-11 - Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3
  Featuring the North Carolina Symphony with conductor Rune Bergmann and electrifying pianist Zee Zee, this exciting performance is one that we're definitely looking forward to. Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 will be performed on two nights, along with Incidental Music from Peer Gynt by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. 
  
  
• March 17-18 - In the Air Tonight: The Music of Phil Collins & Genesis
  Classical and classic rock come together for two nights in March as Guest conductor Stuart Chafetz pays tribute to Phil Collins and Genesis. The symphony will take on classic hits, including "Follow You Follow Me," "Sussudio" and "In the Air Tonight."
  
  
• March 24-26 - Brahms Symphony No. 3
  Alpesh Chauhan will conduct the North Carolina Symphony through Brahms Symphony No. 3, one of the composer's best-known works. The concert will be performed on March 24 and 25 on the Woolner Stage at Meymandi Concert Hall, followed by a performance on March 26 at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College.
  
  
• April 1 - Carnival of the Animals
  A great event for the whole family to enjoy, Carnival of the Animals promises to bring the animal kingdom to life with music. This one-night-only event in Raleigh includes the North Carolina Symphony with conductor Michelle Di Russo, along with massive, lifelike papier-mache puppets courtesy of Paperhand Puppet Intervention.
  
  
• April 13-15 - Holst: The Planets
  A celestial evening is in store at each of the three performances of Holst: The Planets with conductor Thomas Wilkins and Dutch-born American jazz pianist Gerald Clayton. This concert will be held at Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill on April 13 and in Raleigh's Meymandi Concert hall on April 14-15, and also includes Sukkot Through Orion's Nebula by James Lee III and Duke Ellington's New World A-Comin'. 
  
  
• April 28-29 - Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1
  Cellist Sterling Elliott and conductor Grant Llewellyn join the North Carolina Symphony for three performances of Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 at the Woolner Stage at Meymandi Concert Hall. There will be two performances on April 28 and one on the 29th.

The Fuquay-Varina Arts Center is a recent addition to the area near our homes for sale in Fuquay-Varina, but it's already made a big splash in the community. From its many art classes to its theater packed full of spectators every week, this organization always has something new in store. About the Center

The Fuquay-Varina Arts Center opened on March 18th, 2019, after a long stretch of renovation and expansion. The main part of the building started out as a Belk's department store before being retrofitted into a space for the arts. This part of the center currently houses an art gallery, several painting and dance studios, and four classrooms.

The building also received an expansion before the center's official opening, adding a professional-grade theater that can seat almost 300 people. This space is equipped with a full technical booth to help bring even the most elaborate productions to life, allowing the center to generate extra revenue from ticket sales to fund its other activities.

Arts Classes for All

They offer a full catalog of dance classes in a wide range of styles, including jazz, ballet, and tap. If dance isn't your thing, they also offer classes on subjects like comedy, improv, portrait sketching, and even crochet. Each class is taught by a seasoned instructor with a clear passion for the subjects they're teaching.

Most of the center's classes are geared toward children, but there are plenty for adults as well. You'll need to register in advance and pay a course fee to cover the cost of any materials you use. Note that the class line-up changes over the year depending on instructor availability, so be sure to check their online course calendar frequently if you're hoping to see a specific subject covered.

Shows and Exhibits

In addition to their classes, the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center also hosts many artistic works and performances in their gallery and theater. The Massengill Design Build Gallery is always full of paintings, sketches, sculptures, and other works by various artists in the community. New exhibits arrive every month or two to give more artists a chance to have their work showcased.

In the theater, shows are performed every week for a community audience. A few upcoming highlights include:

• Joshua Lozoff's Life is Magic on February 25th at 7:30 PM. This old-fashioned magic show blends classic sleight of hand with psychological tricks to create an entertaining show that is sure to delight people of all ages. 
• Beatlesesque on March 11th at 7:30 PM. Take a trip back to the '60s with an evening full of tunes from Fuquay-Varina's favorite Beatles tribute band, back by popular demand.

This event is the city's annual New Year's celebration, and it's one of the biggest end-of-year gatherings in North Carolina. About the Event

First Night Raleigh takes place on December 31st, starting at 2 PM in the area around City Plaza and Fayetteville Street. The event is suitable for all ages and features an early New Year's countdown at 7 PM so the youngest attendees can still enjoy the fun before bed. Later on, Raleigh residents gather in the middle of the City Plaza to watch the annual Acorn Drop and fireworks display at the stroke of midnight. 

Music and Shows to Ring in the New Year

First Night's all-day concert series has always been one of the major attractions of the events. Starting at 2 PM and running all the way up to the last few minutes before midnight, attendees can enjoy performances from acclaimed local musicians like Zoe & Cloyd, Zoo Crew, and the Gregg Gelb Jazz Quartet. There's a huge range of musical styles on display in each year's lineup, so keep an ear out for your favorite tunes!

The event also hosts shows and exhibitions by local dance troupes, marching bands, and even stand-up comedians and fire performers. Each show takes place at a specific time in a different area of the event venue. Be sure to check the event schedule beforehand, so you know when and where to catch the groups you're most interested in. 

If you have some time to kill in between other activities, you can also check out some of the immersive art projection shows that are on display. These shows are held both indoors and outdoors and are active all night, giving you plenty of time to stop by and enjoy them at your leisure.

You'll love taking a spin on amusement park rides like the Ferris Wheel and the Gravitron, a high-intensity spinning flat ride that's sure to please Raleigh's thrill-seekers. You can also spend some time gliding through the flashing lights of the event's disco roller rink or take a ride in one of the old-fashioned horse-drawn sleighs parading around the event space.

If you plan on bringing kids with you, you can take them to the Children's Celebration event area for special activities aimed at the younger crowd. 2. Check That Costumes Fit Well
   Your child's costume should be comfortable and allow them to freely move around. See that pants, skirts, and robes are hemmed to the appropriate length so that they don't accidentally trip over them. If the costume includes a mask, make sure that the eye holes are positioned in the correct location and don't obscure their vision. Any accessories, like a broom or sword, should be small enough for the child to carry without dragging them on the ground. 

3. Go Over Trick-or-Treat Etiquette
   Even if they've gone trick-or-treating numerous times, make sure kids remember the proper etiquette. Remind kids to only go to homes with the lights turned on. Encourage them to stay on designated walkways and avoid walking through the homeowner's grass or flower beds. A "please" and a "thank you" are fantastic ways for kids to show appreciation to neighbors handing out treats. 

4. Check That Kids Have a Light Source With Them
   With so many kids out and about and adults and older teens heading to Halloween parties or haunted houses, it's essential for anyone walking at night to be well-illuminated. See if you can incorporate glow sticks or reflective tape into your child's costume. Or, add a few strips of reflective tape to their costume to ensure drivers can see them. In a pinch, a flashlight is an easy addition to keeping children illuminated. Make sure that the batteries in the flashlight are new so that it lasts the whole evening!

5. Convey Your Expectations
   If you have older kids who want to go on their own, convey your expectations before they set out. Go over a pre-approved route. Remind them to stay in a group with other children, and see that they have a cellphone on them in case of an emergency. Let your kids know when you expect them home, and make sure they know not to enter any homes. 

6. Hold Off on Enjoying Any Treats
   Kids should avoid digging into their bag of candy until the night is over for multiple reasons. It's a smart idea to go through their candy at the end of the night and remove anything that's come open or appears to have been tampered with. Check that all of their candy is suitable for their dietary needs. Small candy is a choking risk for small kids, and even older kids can inadvertently swallow candy when they're walking. 

7. Stow Electronic Devices
   Keep any electronics (like tablets and mobile phones) stowed until the evening is over. This prevents the device from becoming a distraction while kids are trick-or-treating.

The Blood Connection has appointments available for both whole blood and plasma donations every day.   There will be a blood drive sponsored by iHeartRadio at the Crabtree Valley Mall on June 24, with appointments available from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The mall is currently open with additional safety and sanitation procedures in place, so you can plan a day of shopping around your donation. There have often been summer blood drives at Crabtree Valley Mall with great success, and appointment slots will likely fill up fast this year. At this blood drive, anyone can donate whole blood, and you can donate Power Red if your blood type is O, A Negative, or B Negative.

  The Red Cross has two blood donation centers in Raleigh, and the Raleigh Blood Donation Center is open for donations three days per week. Appointments are available on Monday from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This donation center accepts both whole blood and Power Red donations. Gather up your superheroes, princesses, skeletons, and witches and take them on a Halloween hayride at the Clayton Community Park. With story stops along the way, your children will have fun as they ride through Halloween Land. Fun games, candy, and attractions will also delight.

The Town of Clayton will also host a Halloween Movie Night on Friday evening at dark. Grab some blankets, drinks, and munchies and watch Hocus Pocus under the stars at Clayton Town Square at 110 West Main Street.
